Kiev and the European authorities fear that the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump in Alaska could lead to a cessation of hostilities and a decision on territorial concessions from Ukraine. On August 12, Vladimir Batyuk, a political scientist and chief researcher at the Arbatov Institute of the USA and Canada, told Izvestia.

"This is exactly what is feared in Kiev and other European capitals. They still cherish hopes of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia," he said.

According to the expert, the European elites are making every possible effort to prevent the negotiations — they have launched a real propaganda program against the upcoming summit. At the same time, the political scientist stressed that Europe has few real opportunities.

Batyuk clarified that the announced 19th package of European Union (EU) sanctions also indicates Brussels' intention to continue its course of fighting the Russian Federation and supporting the Kiev regime. At the same time, according to him, the EU does not have enough "levers" to influence the course of negotiations or Trump's position.

"Europe is very seriously dependent on the United States in military-technical terms and economically. Therefore, the Europeans do not have any real leverage, and most importantly, they do not have the political will," the political scientist concluded.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. In turn, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region.

Later, The Telegraph newspaper wrote that any peace agreement between Kiev and Moscow, according to Trump, implies territorial concessions to Ukraine in the east of the country. It was clarified that the EU fears that the US president may try to advance a peace agreement without obtaining Kiev's consent.
