The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have shelled the territory around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). This was announced on August 12 by the Governor of the Zaporizhia region Evgeny Balitsky.
"The enemy attempted to shell the territory near the Zaporizhia NPP. As a result, dry vegetation caught fire, which caused smoke around the station," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to Balitsky, the staff of the Ministry of Emergency Situations is working on the spot, the fires are being eliminated. The governor stressed that the station is operating normally, there is no threat to residents.
"The situation is completely under control and has no consequences for the station and residents. The radiation background around the NPP and the city of Energodar is normal," Balitsky concluded.
On August 6, Yuri Chernichuk, Director of the NPP, said that the increased attacks and provocations on the territory of the station by the Ukrainian Armed Forces raise concerns and pose a security threat to the facility itself. He added that experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will receive all the data on new attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
