Karapetyan's family has filed an arbitration claim against the Armenian authorities
The family of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan has filed an arbitration claim against the Armenian government in the case of Electric Grids of Armenia (ENA). The corresponding statement was published on August 12 on the Facebook page of the Council for the protection of a businessman (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
"Samvel Karapetyan and his family have officially initiated international arbitration proceedings against the Republic of Armenia for bringing Electric Networks of Armenia CJSC to justice in the case of property deprivation," the statement said.
It is clarified that the businessman's family in the lawsuit calls the actions of the Armenian authorities "arbitrary, discriminatory, and politically motivated."
In addition, the Karapetyan family demands that the government of the country compensate them for the damage already inflicted and expected in the future. According to preliminary information, the amount of damage is $500 million and is subject to final assessment by the arbitration tribunal.
Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia, after which he was arrested for two months. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan called the businessman's detention an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), which the businessman publicly supports.
On July 16, the businessman's Defense Council reported on the charges of alleged money laundering against its client. On August 11, it was reported that the Armenian Court of Appeal had declared Karapetyan's detention unlawful.
