The authorities of the administrative center of Alaska, the city of Juneau, reported a possible glacial flood and urged residents of the nearby Mendenhall Valley to evacuate. Flooding is expected to occur this week. The relevant information was published on August 12 by the Alaska Beacon portal.

"Officials of the administrative center of Alaska are asking residents to voluntarily evacuate from the Mendenhall Valley areas ahead of the expected glacial flood this week," the statement said.

It is noted that Mendenhall is a glacier almost 20 km long, located 19 km from Juneau. On Sunday, the water level in the glacial lake began to exceed the limits of the ice dam, indicating a likely glacial breakthrough in the next few days.

According to the portal, in 2024, 290 houses were damaged as a result of flooding.

On August 8, US President Donald Trump announced a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region.

Earlier, on May 29, The Guardian newspaper reported that the village of Blatten in Switzerland was 90% destroyed as a result of the break-off of a large part of the glacier from the Alps. According to a government statement, the glacier also filled up the nearby Lonza riverbed.
