- The political scientist pointed to the EU's concerns about the meeting between Putin and Trump
The European Union (EU) countries fear that Russia and the United States will be able to find a constructive solution to resolve the Ukrainian conflict following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump in Alaska. Andrey Bystritsky, a political scientist and professor at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), shared this opinion with Izvestia on August 12.
"Europe fears that a constructive solution will be found that will suit everyone, at least the warring parties. The Europeans are seized by a maniacal desire to continue this conflict, because, it seems to me, they live in an imaginary world," he said.
According to the expert, the main problem is the consciousness of a number of political leaders who make decisions in Western European countries.
"Their main task is to turn Ukraine into such a "spearhead" aimed at Russia. And for this, of course, they do not want the conflict to end, so they can incite Ukraine to a radical, unconstructive position," Bystritsky stressed.
He also added that EU leaders fear a harsh reaction from the United States. According to the political scientist, this is another factor encouraging the European side to push Kiev towards harsh and irrational attitudes.
On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. In turn, Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region.
Later, on August 11, Trump expressed hope for a constructive meeting with Putin. According to him, a meeting between the leaders of the two countries is necessary in order to clarify the position of the Russian president on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
