An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred off the Japanese island of Hokkaido
A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has been recorded in the Pacific Ocean near the Japanese island of Hokkaido. This was announced on August 12 by the press service of the Sakhalin branch of the Federal Research Center "Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (RAS).
"An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred on Tuesday at 20:11 local time (12:11 Moscow time) near the eastern coast of Hokkaido Island," the source told Interfax.
It is specified that the hearth lay at a depth of 19 km. In addition, a seismic event could be felt in the Southern Kuril Islands in the settlements of the islands of Shikotan and Kunashir, the force of the tremors there could reach two to three points. No tsunami alert was issued.
On August 10, the Office for the Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (AFAD) in Turkey reported that an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred in the western part of the republic. The seismic event was registered at 19:53 local time (coincides with Moscow time). The epicenter of the tremors was in Balikesir province at a depth of 11 km.
The next day, on August 11, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikay announced that one person was killed and 29 others injured in Turkey due to an earthquake in Balikesir province.
