Fashionable tinted mirrors, which are often installed in hallways or used for wardrobes, may look stylish, but in practice they distort the reflection. Alexey Orekhov, an interior decoration expert and General Director of NATEK, told Izvestia on August 13 about common repair mistakes that can cause significant inconvenience in everyday life.

According to him, tinted mirrors make it difficult to fix your hair or check your appearance before leaving home. Instead of a functional element of the interior, it turns out to be an object that interferes with habitual actions.

Lighting devices also often become a source of problems, the expert noted. Dark lampshades on chandeliers without additional light sources do not cope well with lighting, especially in spacious rooms or rooms with high ceilings. At the same time, pendant lights with bright lights placed at eye level can dazzle and cause discomfort in everyday life.

"The glass partitions used to zone the space look spectacular, but at night they turn into a dangerous obstacle. Without proper labeling or illumination, they become almost invisible, which increases the risk of injury, especially if you move around the apartment in a half—asleep state," warned Orekhov.

Choosing furniture that is too heavy is another common mistake. Massive chairs, armchairs or other interior items make it inconvenient to move them, as well as complicate the cleaning or rearrangement process. Even minor changes in the environment require significant effort or outside help.

Decorative elements like projections or niches without functional purpose not only clutter up the space, but also interfere with the full use of the room. Such designs often have neither aesthetic nor practical benefits, the expert added.

Placing furniture along cold end walls, especially in old houses or rooms with poor thermal insulation, can lead to condensation and mold formation — this not only spoils furniture, but also poses a threat to the health of residents, he stressed. Orekhov drew attention to the fact that the finishing materials also require a careful approach.

"Patterned wallpaper and laminate on the sunny side fade quickly. To avoid this, I recommend using paint or decorative plaster for walls, as well as blackout curtains or sunscreens, especially in rooms with south or southwest windows," the expert shared his advice.

Glossy floor coverings, he noted, which are popular in bathrooms and toilets, look spectacular, but become extremely slippery with the slightest moisture, creating a constant risk of falls and injury.

In addition, the fabric upholstery of furniture made of hard and unpleasant to the touch materials causes discomfort during use. Such fabrics can irritate the skin, cause itching and eventually discourage the desire to use furniture.

Sharp corners on furniture and interior items remain one of the most common causes of domestic injuries, the director of the NATEK company added. Even stylish design solutions must take into account safety and convenience in everyday use.

Orekhov emphasizes that when planning repairs, it is important to find a balance between aesthetics and functionality in order to avoid such mistakes and create a truly comfortable living space.

In February, Orekhov gave advice on carrying out high-quality repairs. The choice of materials plays a key role, the expert emphasized. In his opinion, it is worth paying attention not only to their price, but also to compliance with the operating conditions.
