Italian athlete died at the World Games in China

Italian representative Mattia Debertolis died after participating in the World Orienteering Games in Chengdu, China. This was reported on August 12 by the South China Morning Post newspaper.

It is specified that 29-year-old Debertolis lost consciousness during a men's middle-distance orienteering competition. Later, the organizers released a statement confirming the death of the Italian athlete.

"Despite the fact that [Debertolis] received immediate qualified medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away," the International World Games Association said in a statement.

The cause of death is not specified.

The orienteering competition was held 50 km from the center of Chengdu in conditions of intense heat and humidity, the air temperature exceeded 30 degrees. The 6 km long track included 180 m of climbing.

Debertolis was listed as "not finishing" in the official results along with 11 other athletes.

Earlier, on August 9, Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa died at the age of 28 due to injuries sustained in a duel with his compatriot Yoji Saito. It was clarified that death occurred as a result of a traumatic brain injury. The boxer managed to undergo brain surgery.
