Alexey Berest's descendants were awarded the "Golden Star" of the Hero of Russia
Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky on Tuesday, August 12, presented the "Golden Star" of the Hero of Russia to the grandson of Soviet soldier Alexei Berest Alexei.
He noted that Beresta was not among those who were awarded in the first days after the Great Patriotic War.
"By the decision of the President of Russia [Vladimir Putin] <...> historical justice has been restored. It was a great honor for me to hand over the Golden Star of the Hero of Russia to Alexey Berest's grandson, his wife," Medinsky said during the award ceremony, which took place at the Museum of Military Uniforms of the Russian Military Historical Society (RVIO).
Alexey, the grandson of the posthumously awarded man, shared that the whole family tried to achieve a medal in Soviet times, but then nothing happened.
"Today, finally, thanks to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the Rostov region, the governor and the mayor, as well as the participants of the SVO (special operation. — Ed.). We sent a letter, collected signatures and sent it to the president," Alexey said.
Earlier, on July 17, Putin posthumously awarded Berest the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. In May 1945, the military commander commanded a group of Soviet soldiers who hoisted the Banner of Victory over the Reichstag.
After his discharge from the army, Alexey Berest moved to the Rostov region. In 1970, at the cost of his own life, he saved a five-year-old girl by pushing her out from under the wheels of a train./
