The Pentagon has mobilized about 800 U.S. National Guard troops to Washington to fight crime in the capital. The relevant information was published on the official website of the ministry on August 12.

"Today, about 800 military personnel have been deployed as part of the Security and Beauty Task Force in the District of Columbia, of which about 100-200 are providing support to law enforcement agencies," the statement said.

The Pentagon clarified that the responsibilities of the group's employees include "administrative and logistical functions."

"They will be strong, they will be resilient, and they will support their law enforcement partners," said U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Earlier, on August 5, the American leader Donald Trump proposed to take Washington under federal control to combat the growing crime rate. He noted that many criminals are confident of their impunity due to their young age.

In this regard, the US president proposed changing the law and prosecuting juvenile offenders as adults, sending them to prison "for long periods" starting at the age of 14. Trump also noted that Washington will soon turn from the most dangerous city into the safest.

Later, on August 11, Trump announced that the Washington police were coming under the direct control of the federal government. In addition, the American leader announced that the National Guard is being deployed to the city to restore law and order and public safety.
