The head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, announcing the preparation of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, makes it clear that Brussels does not support Washington in its quest for an early ceasefire in Ukraine. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia on August 12.

"The Europeans will have to settle their economic differences first. The EU leadership is running around with the idea of a complete ban on the import of Russian hydrocarbons. However, this initiative is facing stiff resistance at the level of specific countries," the source said.

According to him, Brussels fears that excessive political pressure on the EU member states may lead to the process of disintegration and even the collapse of the union. Feldman also stressed that similar difficulties arise with the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU: European states perceive it as an "alien element," but they have not yet decided to publicly refuse membership.

"The illusory dream of European integration is a key factor motivating Kiev to continue fighting. They can pursue this dream for years or even decades, but the result will still be negative," the political scientist concluded.
