- The accused in the death of a pedestrian in 2017 was transferred from the United States to Irkutsk.
The man who is accused of the death of a pedestrian in 2017 was transferred from the United States to Irkutsk. This was announced on August 12 in the press service of the regional Main Directorate (GU) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
"The accused, who was wanted through Interpol channels, has been transferred to Irkutsk. <...> The detainee had been hiding for several years on the territory of four different states <...> During the operational search activities carried out, the police established that the man was hiding from justice in the Republic of Belarus, Turkey, the Kingdom of Thailand and the United States," the agency said in a Telegram channel message.
According to the investigation, the accused, driving a Nissan Teana car in November 2017, violated traffic regulations and, exceeding the speed limit, ran over a local resident. The pedestrian died at the scene from his injuries, and the driver, against whom a criminal case was initiated, was given a preventive measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave and proper behavior.
However, as it is specified, he left the territory of Russia in 2022, trying to avoid criminal liability. Interpol and the regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation took part in the search for the person involved in the criminal case in accordance with Part 3 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of traffic rules by a person driving a car, resulting in the death of a person").
"Thanks to cooperation with foreign colleagues through Interpol channels, it was possible to track the cross—border movements of the wanted man and establish his whereabouts," the publication notes.
The 43-year-old defendant is currently in custody pending sentencing.
In Moscow on July 11, a 23-year-old driver who ran over five people, including two children, also fled the scene of the accident. Later, on July 12, he was charged under clauses "a" and "b" of Part 2 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of traffic rules by a person driving while intoxicated, which negligently caused serious harm to human health if it involves leaving the place of its commission").. It was clarified that the man faces up to seven years in prison.
