Summer is the safest time for children's health: sunshine, fresh air, and plenty of vitamins. However, many parents are faced with the fact that the child suddenly catches a cold, picks up an intestinal infection or even sore throat. Olga Stepanova, pediatrician at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia on August 12 about why this happens and how to avoid it.

"One of the main causes of summer colds is overheating. Parents often wrap their children up for fear of drafts, but the child is actively moving, sweating, and then the slightest breeze can lead to a runny nose or cough. Direct sun is especially dangerous: without a headdress, you can get heat stroke in just 10-15 minutes," the doctor said.

According to her, air conditioners are another invisible enemy of children's health. When it is +30 degrees outside and +20 degrees indoors, this creates serious stress for the child's body, especially if the cold air is directed directly at him. Such sudden temperature changes can weaken the immune system.

Bathing in cool water and the abuse of icy drinks can also provoke illness, as the cold causes a spasm of blood vessels in the throat, reducing immunity, and then viruses or bacteria easily enter the body.

"On vacation, children often eat unwashed fruits, snack on the beach with dirty hands, or swallow water while swimming in ponds. All this increases the risk of poisoning and digestive disorders," says the doctor.

In order for the summer to pass without illness, the specialist recommends dressing the child according to the weather, avoiding sudden temperature changes, monitoring hygiene and not abusing cold treats.

"Summer is a great time to promote health if you follow simple safety rules. Let the child's holidays be not in the company of a thermometer and syrup, but with the sun, friends and the joy of rest," Stepanova summed up.

Olga Tsagaraeva, a pulmonologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia on April 22 that suffocation, difficulty exhaling and "whistling" when breathing are symptoms of asthma. However, this disease can also manifest itself through coughing. To maintain the quality of life, the doctor recommends that patients avoid contact with triggers, adhere to a balanced diet, control physical activity (preferably swimming, walking and yoga) and do not skip taking prescribed medications even during periods of remission.
