Alzheimer's disease can be caused by various factors, including the accumulation of proteins in the brain and inflammation, which contributes to neurodegeneration in the late form of the disease. She noted that it is in the early stages, before the onset of symptoms, that preventive therapy can be most effective. This was reported by the Medical Press magazine.

Research in recent decades has led to the creation of the first FDA-approved antibodies that remove beta-amyloid from the brain and slow down the course of the disease, but they do not stop it and are not suitable for all patients.

"We are at a turning point in Alzheimer's research. We have started receiving the first treatments, but we have a long way to go. We need to create more effective drugs with fewer side effects," said Amy Arnsten, professor of neurobiology at the Yale School of Medicine.

Among the latest achievements, the expert identified a new blood biomarker that makes it possible to detect early pathology of tau protein long before it can be seen using PET scanning. This discovery, she said, will allow tracking the effectiveness of new treatments.

In June, internist and preventologist Viktor Lishin, in an interview with Izvestia, noted that lack of sleep may be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, a healthy lifestyle, including adequate sleep, can reduce the likelihood of developing pathology.
