- The Armenian Court of Appeal has declared illegal the detention of businessman Karapetyan.
The Armenian Court of Appeal has declared unlawful the detention of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, who was previously arrested in Yerevan. This was announced on August 11 by one of his lawyers, Lianna Gasparyan.
"The Criminal Court of Appeal has declared the arrest of Samvel Karapetyan illegal," she wrote on her Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
According to Gasparyan, the court confirmed that the arrest of the businessman, as a result of which he was illegally detained for about nine hours or more, was illegal.
Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia, after which he was arrested for two months. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan called the businessman's detention an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), which the businessman publicly supports.
On July 16, the businessman's Defense Council reported on the charges of alleged money laundering against its client. On the same day, Edmond Marukyan, an Armenian politician and founder of the Enlightened Armenia party, pointed out in an interview with Izvestia that the authorities were trying to delay Karapetyan's arrest.
