The Catholic Church is accused of "money laundering" by illegally manipulating bank transfers. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 11.

"The Vatican is accused of using a "money laundering lock" by illegally manipulating bank transfers," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the former chief auditor of the Vatican, who was forced to resign in 2017, admitted that his payroll agency could change the names and account numbers in transactions after they were completed, hiding the identity of the recipients and senders.

It clarifies that such actions could provide an opportunity for Vatican officials to transfer funds to private clients and not disclose their identities. The newspaper's article emphasizes that this contributed to "unlimited money laundering and would violate the most basic rules for combating fraud."

It is noted that these statements were made at an "inconvenient moment" for the new Pope Leo XIV, who sought to "strengthen the reputation of the Catholic Church" after decades of financial scandals and looming budget deficits. The Vatican denies all charges.

According to the newspaper, accusations against the Vatican are "technically impossible." However, the newspaper's article also clarifies that these accusations are taken seriously due to the authority of the people who put them forward, as well as stories about "Vatican misconduct."

The Inside the Game portal reported on July 22 that Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala and more than 70 other people are suspected of corruption in the construction of facilities for the 2026 Olympics. According to the portal, Sal was accused of concealing a "conflict of interest and allegedly exerting pressure on the committee responsible for issuing construction permits."
