The defense of Elina Sushkevich, a neonatologist at Kaliningrad maternity hospital No. 4, who was found guilty in the case of the infant's death, intends to appeal the verdict. Lawyer Vyacheslav Zhukovsky told Izvestia about this on August 11.

"There are chances for the conviction to be overturned. Moreover, we [previously] went all the way to the Presidium of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, and we intend to go through it again and again, because we believe that the guilty verdict is illegal," he said.

According to the lawyer, the trial that preceded the guilty verdict was unfair, and the jurors did not have all the information.

"We want to prove that Elina Sushkevich did not kill the baby. She saved him, but for objective reasons she couldn't do it," Zhukovsky added.

On the same day, the Moscow Regional Court sentenced Kaliningrad doctors Sushkevich and Belaya to 9 and 9.5 years in the case of the murder of a baby in a maternity hospital. In addition, they were banned from practicing medicine for three years.

In November 2018, a woman was admitted to maternity hospital No. 4 in Kaliningrad, who gave birth to a boy weighing about 700 g at an early stage of pregnancy. The investigation found that Belaya and Sushkevich decided to kill the child in order not to spoil the statistics in the hospital.

It was later clarified that an expensive drug was required to maintain the vital activity of the baby. In this regard, Belaya allegedly decided not to waste the resources of the maternity hospital. According to investigators, she instructed the child to be given a dose of magnesium sulfate, and to write in the birth history that he was stillborn. The doctors did not admit their guilt.

In December 2020, the Kaliningrad Regional Court acquitted the doctors. Then the prosecutor's office appealed the decision, and in May 2021, the court overturned the acquittal of Belaya and Sushkevich.

In September 2022, the Moscow Regional Court sentenced Belaya and Sushkevich to 9.5 years and 9 years in prison, respectively. In December 2023, the Supreme Court dismissed the cassation appeals against the doctors' verdict. Later, on October 2, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation sent the case for reconsideration, leaving the doctors in custody.
