The United States is threatened by an earthquake with a magnitude of more than nine and a strong tsunami as a result of the collision of tectonic plates along the Cascadia subduction zone in the northwest Pacific Ocean. This was reported on August 10 by the Daily Mail (DM) newspaper, citing scientists from the Virginia Institute of Technology.

"A devastating earthquake along the Cascadia subdiction zone (CSZ) in the northwestern Pacific Ocean of America is almost certain to occur by 2100, with a 37% probability at any time over the next 50 years," the publication said.

It is noted that an earthquake of magnitude eight or nine and a tsunami of 100 feet (335.28 m) high will destroy most of the coast of North America and kill 13.8 thousand people.

Earlier, on July 30, tsunami warnings on the west coast were partially canceled in the United States. It is clarified that only two sections of the California coast remain under the warnings — one in the north of the state, the other in the south-central part. In addition, warnings remain in effect for the Hawaiian Islands and the Aleutian Ridge in Alaska.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
