The AfD stressed the need for compromise in the conflict in Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should establish contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to participate in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict through diplomacy. This statement was made by the co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Tino Fragalla, in an interview with ZDF TV channel on Sunday, August 10.
"I expected from Federal Chancellor Merz, who has been in office for six months, that he would finally establish contact with Vladimir Putin, at least call him and try to find a solution through diplomacy," he said.
Abdullah stressed that a compromise has long been needed on this issue, as the conflict must end as soon as possible. He noted that a number of states might not like this path because of "territorial concessions," but stressed that sponsoring Ukraine with weapons and continuing the conflict was not an option.
"Do we really believe that we will defeat the largest nuclear power in the world and win a conflict that does not belong to us?" he said.
The politician also stated that he does not see Russia as an enemy for Germany. According to him, such rhetoric must be stopped.
"I don't consider Russia an enemy. <...> Good friends <...> may tomorrow be hostile, even have hostile intentions towards Germany. I don't see this in the case of Russia in relation to Germany," Abdullah stressed.
Earlier, on August 9, Polish political scientist Adam Wilomski said that European countries, following Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, are not aware of the real state of affairs in the conflict in Ukraine, which only hinders negotiations. He stressed that US President Donald Trump should ignore the position of European leaders and negotiate with Putin on his own.
On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
