Vadim Fotescu, a deputy of the Moldovan parliamentary group Pobeda, said on August 10 that the verdict against Bashkan (head) The Gagauzian Eugenia Hutsul is illegal and politically motivated.

"You see this blatant injustice, this political verdict, the purpose of which is to remove and discredit the Bashkan of Gagauzia!" said the politician, speaking at a protest near the building of prison No. 13. A recording of his speech is provided by Moldovan Channel 5 in its Telegram channel.

Fotescu regarded Hutsul's sentence as an attempt by the authorities to intimidate the opposition and voters on the eve of the upcoming elections.

A protest rally near prison No. 13 in Chisinau took place earlier in the day. In addition to the Hutsuls, it was aimed at supporting her colleague Svetlana Popan and the activists of the Victory bloc Ilya and Irina Volchuk. No arrests were reported at the protest.

On August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up." The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in turn, called on international structures to assess the Hutsul verdict.

Later, on August 7, the People's Assembly of Gagauzia announced that it did not intend to recognize the sentence imposed by the Hutsul. The parliament considers the verdict "politically motivated and anti-Gagauz." A regional headquarters was set up to coordinate actions in defense of Bashkan.
