European leaders should support US President Donald Trump's peace efforts on the Ukrainian conflict at a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on August 15. This was announced on August 10 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

He clarified that Trump wants to achieve peace, which is why he has scheduled a meeting with the Russian president.

"European leaders also have a chance. They have lost [the opportunity to achieve] peace, but now they can fix everything. They can only support President Trump," Orban wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

The Hungarian Prime Minister also stressed that Budapest's interests include the lifting of sanctions, the cessation of killings in the context of the conflict and the resumption of processes in the global economy.

Earlier in the day, the head of the European Union's (EU) diplomatic service, Kaya Kallas, called a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers to discuss the upcoming Trump-Putin summit. She clarified that the extraordinary meeting will be held on Monday, August 11. Callas also stressed that during the meeting, the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States must take into account the interests of Brussels and Kiev.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in turn, expressed hope that the talks between Trump and Putin would lead to a breakthrough in the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, he shared plans to hold a telephone conversation with the American leader.
