Kiev has condemned Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for comparing Ukraine to grass under elephants' feet. This was announced on August 10 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on its website.

Earlier, Fico, on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), recalled an African saying, describing Ukraine's prospects in the conflict with Russia. According to him, "when elephants fight, the grass suffers." In this case, the "elephants" are the presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, and the "grass" is Ukraine, Fico believes.

"It is a shame that the head of government of a member state of the European Union allows himself to openly offensive rhetoric against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people," the ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also warned Fico against attempts to boost the political ratings of his party through such statements. The ministry noted that this is frivolity, which insults the memory of the dead Ukrainians.

"We highly appreciate the comprehensive support of Ukraine from international partners. <...> Against this background, Robert Fico's statements are at odds with the spirit of good neighborliness, solidarity and mutual respect demonstrated by the Slovak people," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

With his statements, Fico insults his people, the department concluded.

In addition, on August 9, Slovak Prime Minister Fico, commenting on the meeting between Putin and Trump, said that Ukraine would pay dearly for the failed strategy of the West to weaken Russia by supporting the conflict. Fico noted the importance of the countries' agreement on an immediate cessation of hostilities. He warned that some Western countries are capable of disrupting the negotiations.
