- Egypt has returned body parts of an unknown mummy and a funeral stele from Germany and Britain.
Egypt has returned 13 artifacts from Germany and the UK, including a mummy's head and arm and a funerary stele. This was announced on August 10 by the Ahram Online portal.
"The Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) officially accepted the artifacts on Saturday (August 9th. - Ed.) at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the new administrative capital," RIA Novosti quoted the message as saying.
According to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathi, the return of these artifacts reflects Egypt's commitment to protecting its unique heritage. He also expressed gratitude to the Governments of Germany and the United Kingdom for their role in facilitating the return of the treasures.
The British side returned to Egypt a limestone funeral stele from the time of the New Kingdom, a funeral mask made of beads and many amulets, as well as a vessel made of earthenware, a blue earthenware funeral flask of the XVIII dynasty and a fragment of a bronze crown.
Germany, in turn, returned the skull and arm of an unknown mummy and an amulet in the shape of an ankh, which in ancient Egypt was considered a symbol of life.
The artifacts were brought to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo's Tahrir Square. They will be prepared for restoration for a special exhibition of recently recovered treasures.
Earlier, on February 20, archaeologists found a new tomb of Pharaoh Thutmose II in Egypt for the first time in 100 years. The artifact was discovered near Luxor province in the south of the country. It was clarified that this is the last lost tomb of the kings of the XVIII dynasty in Egypt.
