The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) is considering the possibility of transforming the Palestinian Authority into the State of Palestine. This decision can be unilaterally announced at the UN General Assembly (GA) in New York. This was reported on August 10 by the newspaper Al Arabi Al Jadeed, citing a representative of the Palestinian leadership.

"The leadership is considering the possibility of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announcing at the UN General Assembly session the transformation of the Palestinian Authority into a state unilaterally," the article says.

The source noted that before announcing the decision, Abbas must make a constitutional statement. In addition, the exact date of the elections to the National Council of Palestine must be determined.

Thus, the transformation of the Palestinian Authority into a state may take place before the elections to the council by the end of this year. The media source noted that this issue was studied and raised back in 2015, but the president froze it without explaining the reasons.
