The director of the Vakhtangov Theater called Butusov a bright and original person.

Russian theater director Yuri Butusov was a bright and original man who built his own theater and had his own philosophy. Kirill Krok, a Soviet and Russian theatrical public figure and director of the Vakhtangov Theater, informed Izvestia about this on August 10.

He clarified that Butusov became a part of the Evgeny Vakhtangov Theater 14 years ago, and his first production was the play "Measure for Measure" based on the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare. According to Krok, at that time the director was not so widely known in the theater world, but he had already made himself known with productions at Satyricon and the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater.

"He was a bright and original man, built his own theater, had his own philosophy. Not everyone liked his creative style, not everyone accepted him, but I am sincerely grateful to Yuri Nikolaevich for everything he did," said the director of the theater.

According to Krok, as the chief director of the Evgeny Vakhtangov Theater, Butusov staged three more performances, two of which — "Running after Bulgakov" and "King Lear" based on Shakespeare — are still in the repertoire. He clarified that the public continues to go to these productions, they are also dear to the actors who are happy to participate in them.

Kroc clarified that he had been in contact with Butusov very rarely over the past few years. He called his death terribly ridiculous and tragic.

"It is painful and bitter that the life of this talented and necessary person for the Russian theater ended so unexpectedly and prematurely," he added.

Actress Varvara Shmykova announced Butusov's death at the age of 64 earlier that day. Kroc later clarified that the director drowned on vacation in Bulgaria with his wife and two children.
