The Interior Ministry announced a method of fraud using QR codes.
Russians risk transferring money to fraudsters by scanning a fake QR code in public areas. This was announced on August 9 by the Russian Interior Ministry.
"The user scans the code, thinking that it leads to a promotion or discount, but instead automatically transfers money to the fraudster's account," the agency told TASS.
The Interior Ministry also gave recommendations to avoid becoming a victim of this fraudulent scheme. According to the agency, the source of the QR code should be checked and codes from questionable sources should not be scanned. In addition, it is not recommended to enter personal and bank information unnecessarily. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also recommended downloading applications not through QR codes, but in official app stores.
On August 7, the Department for Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK) of the Russian Interior Ministry reported that fraudsters were sending fake letters to Russians from the State Traffic Inspectorate, through which they steal bank card data or install malicious software on devices. The victim receives a message via e-mail or messenger about an alleged traffic violation and the need to pay a fine before the due date.
