A meteorite whose fragment pierced the roof of a house in the US state of Georgia is older than the planet Earth. This was stated by the CBS television channel with reference to specialists from the University of Georgia on Saturday, August 9.

"He (the meteorite. It belongs to a group of asteroids in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, which we now believe can be linked to the collapse of a much larger asteroid about 470 million years ago," explained planetary geologist Scott Harris.

He examined fragments of a meteorite weighing 23 grams, collected in the affected house, and concluded that this meteorite was formed about 4.56 billion years ago. It is 20 million years older than Earth.

Harris shared that he and his team from the University of Georgia, as well as their colleagues from the University of Arizona, will provide the results of their research to the nomenclature office of the Meteorite Society. They would like to name the object of study the "McDonough meteorite," after the town of the same name in Georgia, where the damaged house is located.

Harris also noted that this is the 27th meteorite found in Georgia and the sixth recorded fall.

"Previously, this was observed once every few decades, rather than several times over the course of 20 years. Modern technologies and the attentive attitude of the public will help us find more and more meteorites," the publication says.

The meteorite fall was reported earlier, on June 27. A fragment pierced the roof of an apartment building on Thursday, a meteor was observed in the states of Tennessee and South Carolina. Information about the victims was not reported. According to experts, the explosion at an altitude of about 43 km above the ground released an energy equivalent to about 20 tons of TNT.
