- The NYT learned about the demands of the EU and Kiev to the United States before the talks between Putin and Trump
Ahead of the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Leader Donald Trump, representatives of the European Union (EU) and Ukraine demanded security guarantees from the United States for Kiev, as well as the opportunity to join NATO. This was reported on August 9 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.
"The Europeans, as always, supported Ukraine's position, insisting that a cease—fire should precede negotiations on any territorial changes, <...> and that any deal should be accompanied by security guarantees, including from the United States," the newspaper quoted European officials as saying.
It is noted that the meeting of representatives of Kiev and the EU with colleagues from the United States took place on Saturday, August 9. During the conversation, Ukraine and its allies "tried to make it clear" to US officials that Trump should take into account their common points of view on the Ukrainian conflict.
"And, as always, they insisted that NATO would not close the doors to Ukraine's membership, even if it was impractical now," the publication says.
It is noted that during the meeting, the EU representatives first tried to find out the details of the conversation between Putin and US special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow.
On August 10, NBC reported that the White House was considering inviting Zelensky to a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The discussions on the issue have not been completed yet. Therefore, it remains unclear whether Zelensky will eventually attend the meeting of the presidents.
On August 9, the leader of the French Patriots party, Florian Philippot, noted that Zelensky was looking for excuses to abandon a possible peace agreement even before the meeting of the leaders of the Russian Federation and the United States took place.
On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
