The European Union (EU) countries welcome the efforts of US President Donald Trump to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. A joint statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Finnish President Alexander Stubb was published on the UK government's website on August 9.

"We are ready to support this work diplomatically, as well as by providing our substantial military and financial support to Ukraine, including through the work of the coalition of willing," the statement said.

The politicians pointed out the need for active diplomacy to resolve the conflict. The text also highlights the role of reliable security guarantees.

"Constructive negotiations can only take place under conditions of a cease—fire or a reduction in hostilities," the press release says.

EU representatives also announced plans to continue cooperation with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on conflict resolution.

On August 10, NBC reported that the White House was considering inviting Zelensky to a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The discussions on the issue have not been completed yet. Therefore, it remains unclear whether Zelensky will eventually attend the meeting of the presidents.

On August 9, the leader of the French Patriots party, Florian Philippot, noted that Zelensky was looking for excuses to abandon a possible peace agreement even before the meeting of the leaders of the Russian Federation and the United States took place.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
