Alaska is a symbolic region in the context of relations between Russia and the United States, and the meeting of the leaders of the two countries, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, on August 15 could be a point of restoration of Russian-American relations. This was stated on August 10 by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia.

"Of course, Alaska looks like a very interesting and very symbolic place for Russian-American relations. And, of course, after centuries, Russia and the United States are literally connected through this territory," he said.

The expert added that the meeting of the two leaders in Alaska could be a point of restoration of relations between the countries. Also, this region could have been chosen from the point of view of its security.

At the same time, the political scientist notes, the Russian Federation and the United States have a significant number of topics that need to be discussed as part of the resumption of contacts.

"This includes the Arctic, and the control of conventional and unconventional weapons. And, of course, duties, tariffs, sanctions," Asafov added.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.

The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.

On August 9, Kirill Dmitriev, special representative of the head of the Russian Federation for cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said that a number of countries would make efforts to disrupt the planned meeting between Putin and Trump. In his opinion, political provocations will be undertaken, and disinformation will also spread.
