Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa died at the age of 28 due to injuries sustained in a duel with his compatriot Yoji Saito. This was announced by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) on its page on the social network X on Saturday, August 9th.
"The WBO mourns the passing of Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa, who tragically died from injuries sustained in a fight with Yoji Saito on August 2 at the Korakuen Gym in Tokyo," the statement said.
The organization offered condolences to the family, friends and the boxing community.
As noted by The Ring, death occurred due to traumatic brain injury. The boxer managed to undergo brain surgery.
After the August 2 fights, when Japanese boxer Shigetoshi Kotari also suffered death-threatening injuries, the Japanese Boxing Commission announced that all Eastern and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) title fights will now be held in 10 rounds instead of 12, BBC Sport reported.
