- The senator from Alaska named an Air Force base as a likely meeting place for Putin and Trump.
The venue for the meeting of the leaders of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which is scheduled to be held in Alaska, may be the country's air force base. This assumption was made on August 9 by Senator from Alaska, a member of the Republican Party Dan Sullivan.
The fact that this American state will host the summit is already remarkable, the senator believes. And not only from the point of view of history. Sullivan noted that the American leader's grandfather owned a hotel in Alaska many years ago.
"I am sure that there will be a very high level of security between Trump and Putin. It would be great if the President of the United States could see our state, which he helped a lot. I think they will be focused on the meeting, I wouldn't be surprised if it was either JBER (Elmendorf–Richardson base) or Ailson Air Base to maximize security," he said in an interview with Alaska's News Source.
The senator added that Alaska's adoption of the summit is absolutely logical, since this state is the most strategic place in the world. In addition, it connects the United States and Russia with a common history.
"We are a place where world leaders have visited at important moments in history. For example, the visit of [US President Ronald] Reagan and the Pope in Fairbanks in 1984. Many, especially in Alaska, believe that he marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. We also remember the meeting of [US President Richard] Nixon with the Emperor of Japan in Alaska in 1971, the first time since World War II," Sullivan said.
According to him, holding a meeting of the leaders of the two world powers in Alaska makes great sense. The White House administration is making great efforts for peace and diplomacy in many other regions of the world.
On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
