European countries and Ukraine have presented their proposal, which, in their opinion, could serve as the basis for the upcoming talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Saturday, August 9, citing sources.

"The European powers and Ukraine have responded to Vladimir Putin's plan for a ceasefire with a counter—proposal, which, according to them, should serve as the basis for upcoming talks between Trump and the Russian leader," the newspaper writes.

According to WSJ sources, the European proposal includes the requirement that a cease-fire must be achieved before other steps are taken, and it is emphasized that the exchange of territories is possible only on a reciprocal basis.

In addition, as part of this plan, territorial concessions from Kiev should be protected by ironclad security guarantees, including the possibility of Ukraine's membership in NATO. The plan was presented to key American diplomats, including U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.

The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
