- The expert called the city of Anchorage in Alaska a possible meeting place for Putin and Trump.
The city of Anchorage in Alaska may become the venue for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump. This was announced on Saturday, August 9, by Troy Baffard, director of the Center for Arctic Security and Sustainability at the University of Alaska, in an interview with Izvestia.
"It is very likely that it will be Anchorage — most of the infrastructure, logistics, air service and security system have already been established there," Baffard suggested.
He added that preparatory groups could arrive in Anchorage from Washington in advance to arrange a meeting.
"I think the main topic will be the <conflict> between Ukraine and Russia, a possible ceasefire, maybe a plan to verify its implementation, perhaps a partial humanitarian exchange or prisoner exchange," Baffard said.
According to him, the consequences of the meeting between the two leaders could be "very significant."
On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
