Choosing Alaska for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump was a symbolic decision. This was announced on August 9 by Alexander Yakovenko, member of the Presidium of the Scientific and Expert Council of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation.

"Alaska refers to the positive part of our common history: the armed neutrality of Catherine II during the American War of Independence and two Russian squadrons off the coast of America during the American Civil War. Of course, the meeting may refer to the common Arctic future of the two countries," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

At the same time, Yakovenko noted that the decision of the heads of state to meet in Alaska was unexpected and symbolic for many. He stressed that this is the diplomacy of strong sovereign powers in action, which is free from the intrigues and petty interests of the capitals of European countries.

Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 8. According to him, it will be held on August 15. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy expressed his willingness to receive the leaders of the United States and Russia.

On the same day, the US president stressed that he was convinced of the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. In this regard, Trump pointed out the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
