The choice of the American state of Alaska for the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Leader Donald Trump underlines that the meeting will be of a bilateral nature. Alexey Pushkov, a member of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council, pointed this out on August 9.

He noted that the heads of Russia and the United States had never met in Alaska before.

"This choice highlights the bilateral rather than multilateral nature of the meeting, which it would have to some extent if a third country had been chosen. Thus, the bilateral dialogue between Russia and the United States and the role of their leaders in deciding the fate of the world are coming to the fore again," Pushkov said in his Telegram channel.

The senator added that by their choice, both leaders made it clear that they are capable of non-standard solutions.

"This is, at least, an unexpected and non-standard decision. Alaska as a meeting place was not discussed in the media, unlike the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Istanbul," the Federation Council member added.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy announced his readiness to receive the leaders of the United States and Russia for talks.

On the same day, the leader of the United States expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. In this regard, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
