Uzbekistan plans to build a large nuclear power plant (NPP) jointly with the Russian corporation Rosatom in a short period of time. This was announced on Saturday, August 9, by Director of the Atomic Energy Agency of Uzbekistan Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev.

"We have signed a document with Rosatom on the construction of a large [nuclear] power plant," Akhmedkhadzhayev said in an interview with the O'zbekiston 24 TV channel.

Akhmedkhadzhayev added that based on the signed document, studies are currently being conducted to assess the possibilities of connecting the nuclear power plant to the country's energy system. He also noted that it is planned to introduce a larger power plant and system in the near future.

On April 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the agreement on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Uzbekistan was signed last year, but now the implementation of the plan is moving to the practice stage. He also stressed that Russia is ready to double gas supplies to Uzbekistan through the implementation of new infrastructure projects.
