- Axios has learned about the plans of Ukraine and the West to hold a summit before the meeting between Putin and Trump
Representatives of Ukraine, the United States and the European Union (EU) plan to hold a summit, during which their common position will be prepared before the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump. This was reported on August 9 by the Axios portal, citing three knowledgeable sources.
Senior officials from the United States, Ukraine, and several European countries plan to meet this weekend in the UK to try to reach common ground ahead of a planned meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It is noted that the reason for the preparation of the meeting may be the concern of Ukraine and its allies from the NATO military bloc about Trump's decision to agree to a settlement of the conflict, ignoring the opinion of the EU on this issue.
According to the portal, the initiative is currently under preparation. It also remains unknown which countries will be represented at the meeting.
On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
