American journalist Seymour Hersh published an article on Saturday, August 9, in which he commented on the future meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

"It is unclear who initiated the invitation, but the [American] president's statement came a few days after Special Representative Steve Witkoff's meeting with Putin in Moscow," the journalist noted.

He added that Trump could consider investing in real estate and mining rare earth metals in territories that have fallen under Russian control. However, this option may not be possible unless "a diplomatic breakthrough occurs at the last minute."

"Trump, like many other countries in the world, sees the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine as recognition that Russia has annexed significant territories of Ukraine, and any settlement will require agreements on new international borders," he said.

American officials and military experts also pointed out to the journalist Putin's desire not only to liberate new regions, but also to achieve the demilitarization of Ukraine, as well as to limit the influence of the NATO bloc on the country. Such conditions make it possible to ensure that the Kiev regime never poses a threat to Russia.

"President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky wants to join NATO and retain power, but in this conflict he has bad cards in his hands and he is losing support in recent polls," Hersh stressed.

It is noted that Kiev has been "on the verge of defeat" in the conflict with the Russian Federation for three years. Also, the country's leadership was unable to gain sufficient support from Western countries.

The journalist pointed out that currently the United States actually represents "one of the parties" in the conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. At the same time, the situation is unfavorable for America. According to Hersh, the current situation could have "catastrophic consequences" for both Western Europe and the entire world.

"The conflict must be stopped, and this will require external leadership. So far, there has been no constructive dialogue. The presidential summit with Russia could be a starting point," he concluded.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.

The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
