In 2024, the administration of former US President Joe Biden considered the idea of deporting Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin and all other Russian National Hockey League (NHL) players from the country. This was reported on August 8 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.

"[Former National Security Adviser Jake] Sullivan was thinking about <...> expel Russian hockey players from America, including Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL star who chased Wayne Gretzky's record for the most points scored," the publication said.

As the newspaper noted, Sullivan eventually abandoned the idea.

Alexander Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the NHL regular season on April 6 in a match against the New York Islanders, breaking Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals scored. Washington's owner Ted Leonsis noted on May 18 that Ovechkin had written his name into history.
