American astronaut James Lovell has died.

American astronaut and commander of the Apollo 13 spacecraft James Lovell has died at the age of 97. This was reported on August 8 by the Associated Press (AP), citing a NASA statement.

James Lovell, the Apollo 13 commander who helped turn the failed lunar mission into an engineering triumph, has died at the age of 97.

It is noted that the cosmonaut was one of the most frequent U.S. astronauts on missions. He carried out four space flights — Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13. Lovell's total time in space is 715 hours, 4 minutes and 57 seconds.
