US President Donald Trump has demanded that the University of California pay $1 billion in compensation as a condition for the resumption of funding for the educational institution. This was reported on August 8 by CNN, citing sources.

"The draft of the proposed agreement, sent to the educational institution on Friday, requires the University of California at Los Angeles to pay the federal government $ 1 billion in several stages," the publication says.

It is noted that the possible agreement is part of the educational institution's efforts to "return to the negotiating table" with the US presidential administration.

In addition, to resume funding, Trump demanded that the university pay an additional $172 million to satisfy the claims of people who suffered as a result of violations by the university of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination in employment based on race, skin color, religion, gender or national origin.

"As a public university, we are the stewards of taxpayers' funds, and a payout of this magnitude would completely destroy the largest public university system in our country, as well as cause enormous damage to our students and all residents of California," said James Milliken, president of the University of California.

Earlier, on April 29, it was reported that the Trump administration had launched an investigation into Harvard University and the Harvard Law Review scientific journal in connection with allegations of racism. In this regard, an audit will be conducted with respect to the educational institution, which will affect internal documents, as well as the policy of selecting staff and authors of articles.

Earlier, on February 4, the group "Students against Racial Discrimination" filed a lawsuit for racial discrimination against the University of California. If successful, the lawsuit will prohibit considering or asking about race during the admission process. Plaintiffs' lawyer Jonathan Mitchell said that lawsuits will continue to be filed until universities adopt an admission system without regard to skin color.
