- Russia and Kazakhstan have launched the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the republic
On Friday, August 8, Russia and Kazakhstan launched the construction of the republic's first nuclear power plant. The ceremony was attended by Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev and Chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency Almasadam Satkaliyev. The event was held near the village of Ulken in the Almaty region, where the station will be built.
Likhachev noted that the construction of the first nuclear power plant became possible thanks to the cooperation of the governments of Russia and Kazakhstan. The Russian side, he continued, proposes "to build the bestseller of today's global nuclear technology market" — a power plant with a VVER-1200 reactor. The head of the corporation stressed that four reactors have been providing the center of Russia with sustainable green energy at full capacity for many years.
"Another decision of the Kazakh authorities is that, having headed this direction, Rosatom should attract the maximum number of foreign suppliers of the best practices and best competencies and implement the project in the format of an international consortium. We are not just ready for this, we know how to do it and, perhaps, we know how to do it better than anyone else on the planet," Likhachev stressed.
It is planned to carry out survey and engineering works at the initial stage of NPP construction. The Kazakh side has already provided the Rosatom representative with a capsule with soil samples that were taken from the site of the future station for research.
Likhachev noted on June 14 that Rosatom State Corporation is planning to build a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan based on the most advanced and efficient project in the world, using Russian technologies. On the same day, Rosatom State Corporation was chosen as the leader of the consortium for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. According to Rosatom's proposals, work has begun on the issue of attracting state export financing from the Russian Federation.
