- Atlantic learned about Trump's fears of harming negotiations with China due to sanctions
US President Donald Trump is forced to pursue a more restrained policy of secondary sanctions against China due to fears of disrupting ongoing negotiations. This was reported on August 7 by The Atlantic magazine, citing sources.
"Trump signed a decree imposing sanctions on India this week because he was already annoyed by the lack of progress in the trade agreement with Delhi. However, he is much more cautious about sanctions against China, Russia's other key economic partner, for fear of disrupting ongoing trade negotiations with Beijing," the publication says.
At the same time, it is noted that Trump is also currently considering whether to impose stricter restrictions on the Russian Federation if the conflict in Ukraine is not resolved within the time frame set by him.
On August 6, the American leader signed a decree imposing an additional duty of 25% on imports from India. The White House clarified that this measure was introduced in connection with India's "direct or indirect" import of petroleum products from the Russian Federation.
Shortly after, the chairman of the opposition Indian National Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, said that the US imposition of trade duties on imports of Indian goods was economic blackmail.
