Russia was the only country that gave an adequate response to Georgia's attack on South Ossetia in 2008. This was announced on August 8, on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the events, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"In a situation where the international community has withdrawn from attempts to pacify the aggressor, Russia turned out to be the only country that gave a timely and adequate response to this treacherous attack," she said.

It is noted that civilians of South Ossetia and citizens of Russia suffered as a result of the aggression. There were also recorded attempts to storm the locations of Russian peacekeepers from the Mixed Peacekeeping Forces. In this regard, the Russian Federation was forced to conduct an operation to force Georgia to peace, and then also recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as sovereign states.

The Georgian aggression also resulted in the launch of International Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia (MDZ). The main task of the new negotiation mechanism is to maintain security in the region through dialogue between the parties to the conflict.

"In many ways, thanks to this format and the mechanisms of interaction between the parties operating under its auspices, in recent years it has been possible to maintain relative calm in the Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-South Ossetian borderlands," Zakharova said.

On June 13, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin called on Georgia to abandon the use of force in Transcaucasia. Earlier, on April 14, the diplomat said that Moscow was ready to restore diplomatic relations with Tbilisi.

Georgia severed diplomatic relations with Russia in 2008. At an extraordinary meeting, the country's parliament unanimously adopted a resolution "instructing the executive branch to terminate diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation."
