- Reuters has learned about the possible transfer of rights to the corridor to the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic by Armenia to the United States
Armenia may grant the United States the rights to develop a transport corridor that will connect the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic (AR) with the main territory of Azerbaijan. This was reported on August 7 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.
"When U.S. President Donald Trump meets the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House on Friday, the meeting will end with the signing of a peace agreement that includes exclusive U.S. rights to develop a strategic transit corridor through the South Caucasus," the officials said on condition of anonymity.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are expected to sign a document aimed at achieving a "concrete path to peace." It is specified that the request for the creation of the corridor was sent by the Azerbaijani side.
The United States plans to transfer the route under the management of a consortium that deals with infrastructure and management. At the same time, the corridor will be operated in accordance with the legislation of Armenia.
"The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will also sign documents demanding the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. — Ed.), which since its establishment in 1992 has been the co—chair of France, Russia and the United States to mediate the settlement of the conflict," the agency's sources noted.
It is planned that the transport corridor will be named the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP).
On July 21, Pashinyan announced that the Zangezur Corridor project in Armenia would cease to exist, and a "Crossroads of the World" would appear instead. The Armenian Prime Minister noted that he sees no reason why representatives of Turkey and Azerbaijan should not travel around Armenia. According to him, the "Crossroads of the World" implies the possibility of transport transit.
On May 26, Pashinyan stated that the Constitution of Armenia may be amended in order to achieve peace in the conflict with Azerbaijan. The Prime Minister stressed that the opportunity to conclude a peace agreement should not be missed.
