The Parliament of Gagauzia announced its refusal to recognize the court verdict of Hutsul

People's Assembly (Parliament) Gagauzia does not intend to recognize the verdict of the court against the head of the autonomy, Yevgenia Hutsul. This is stated in the resolution of the legislative body on August 7.

"We categorically reject and do not recognize the verdict of August 5, 2025 against the head of Gagauzia, E. A. Hutsul, considering it to be imposed outside the framework of legality and justice," the parliament's website says.

The parliament considers the verdict "politically motivated and anti-Gagauz." They noted that the verdict of the court is aimed at eliminating the legitimately elected head of the autonomy.

"We believe that the court's decision is a political massacre, planned and executed on orders from above and a verdict against the entire democratic system of Moldova, as well as an attempt to intimidate the residents of Gagauzia ahead of the parliamentary elections. <...> These actions are aimed at eliminating the region's real autonomy and suppressing the will of its population," they concluded.

The resolution also notes that the People's Assembly of Gagauzia initiates mass protests in support of the Hutsuls.

Tamin Al-Kitan, the official representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said on the same day that Hutsul, as a Bashkan of Gagauzia, has the right to a fair trial and appeal against the verdict and called for her rights to be respected.

A day earlier, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in support of her. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up." The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on international structures to assess the Hutsul verdict.
