Russia has initiated a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the persecution of the head of the Gagauz Autonomy, Yevgenia Hutsul. This was announced on Thursday, August 7, by Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.

"Today, at the initiative of Russia, the UN Security Council will consider in a closed format <...> the situation around the persecution <...> of Evgenia Gutsul in Moldova," Polyansky wrote on his Telegram channel.

In addition, the meeting will address the issue of the persecution of the President of Republika Srpska (Entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, BiH) Milorad Dodik.

The day before, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up."

On the same day, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on international structures to assess the Hutsul verdict. She noted that the actions of the Chisinau authorities are aimed at "diluting autonomy" and are a manifestation of a "police state."
