It was established by the leadership of the USSR in 1939 to demonstrate the achievements of Soviet athletes and promote a healthy lifestyle among citizens. Today, the celebration remains one of the largest sporting events in the Russian Federation, with many tournaments, competitions, relay races and other events throughout the country timed to coincide with it.
