Volkswagen to discontinue production of Touareg SUV
Volkswagen Group plans to stop production of its prestigious Touareg model in 2026. This was reported on August 7 by the British magazine Autocar, citing its own sources.
The abandonment of the Touareg marks the departure of the VW group from the premium segment and a change in priorities. As an alternative to the SUV, the German automaker will offer a more affordable Tayron crossover, which is essentially an elongated Tiguan.
The VW Touareg, introduced in 2002, was developed in parallel with the original Porsche Cayenne and used the same platform. Thanks to this decision, Porsche got an SUV, and Volkswagen could realize its ambitions in the premium segment.
Along with the Touareg, VW has decided to exclude the ID 5 electric model from its lineup. It was introduced in 2021 as a more sporty analogue of the ID 4 model, but it has not become popular. The planned discontinuation of this model by 2027 will be part of a broader effort to optimize the range and concentrate Kotznern on mass-produced models, writes Autocar.
In Russia, the last officially imported Volkswagen Touareg SUVs were sold in March 2023, but the import of cars through alternative channels continued.
Earlier it became known that the AGR Holding plant in Kaluga has completed the preparation of the paint shop for the serial production of cars of the new Russian brand Tenet. Previously, Volkswagen cars were produced there.
In the near future, the company will begin production of full-cycle machines. AGR representatives said that the main work in the preparation of paint and varnish production was focused on adapting the equipment to the design features of the new car, taking into account the requirements of Russian operating conditions.
